Marseille is the second largest city after Paris. The port was built in 600 B.C. and the old port region still retains the elegance of a simple port town. It is also home to several famous places such as Notre Dame and various museums. For you literature buffs, there is also the Chateau d’If which was the stage for Alexandre Dumas’ famous work “The Count of Monte Cristo.” It’s quite easy to get there by boat and shouldn’t be missed. Finally, Marseille is famous for its local dishes such as bouillabaisse which is a mixture of the best fish as well as the before-dinner drink pastis.
